Marco Abraham

Author of Lost Blood and survivor of
the Sabra and Shatila massacre

Overview

This book contains explicit accounts of the atrocities committed against the refugees of Sabra and Shatila camps in 1982 in Lebanon by the only eyewitness to have survived and written a book about the horrors. It is a minute by minute account of the brutal killings of the refugees of the camps.

The Israeli government, amid massive protests in their own country created the Kahan Commission to investigate the Sabra and Shatila Massacre. The Kahan Commission report states, “We have found, as has been detailed in this report, that the Minister of Defense (Ariel Sharon) bears personal responsibility.” The transcripts of this investigation have never been released. It is hoped that the Israeli government will release these files this September, the 25th anniversary of the massacre. The release of these transcripts will be anticipated by millions of people worldwide.

Mr. Abraham is extremely proud to now be an American citizen and is determined to share his story and show that the western democracies with their values and freedoms are indeed "heaven" and more importantly, to attempt to make us all understand that peace is not only desired and hoped for but a desperate necessity.

In his words, "We are all brothers. We are all capable of making decisions and please let those decisions steer our world to peace."

 Author’s Notes

I would like to start this note by saying it truly breaks my heart to reopen a wound that was made by the massacre almost a quarter of a century ago. This wound slowly reopened the moment I decided to write this book. This true story was buried inside me until I decided to share it with the rest of the world.

I felt that what had happened at the Sabra and Shatila camps in September 1982 should be told. I owe it to the victims of the massacre. It is a true story and it is written exactly as it happened and how I personally experienced it. I know for a fact that some groups or governments will not be happy to see this story brought back to life. They have tried to bury this story along with the victims of the massacre. My life was spared for a reason—to tell the outside world what really occurred during the massacre, not just the before and after.

This untold story will prove to the modern societies that hate and revenge still exist among all peoples. It is suppressed until one day when it can be used as the worst weapon known to human kind. I witnessed the destructive forces of this weapon. The hate and revenge left behind over thirty five hundred dead, most of them women, children and elderly men. What had driven those butchers to torture women and kill children of all ages? Is it the hate or the revenge or possibly both?
I witnessed the murders of those unarmed and defenseless civilians on the streets of Sabra and Shatila camps. I saw the victims’ faces as they were being slaughtered by the armed forces. I could tell by the expressions on their faces that they were clueless as to why they were being raped and killed in the most horrific ways. All they knew was that the P.L.O. had evacuated Beirut so that the Palestinians left behind could live in peace, not knowing that hate knows no peace—only revenge.

The people of both camps were very simple people, living under the worst conditions. They were not aware that they were surrounded by enemies. Those butchers knew that there were no P.L.O. fighters left behind in the camps. This is the reason why they infiltrated the camp to kill nearly the entire population. If they had known for a fact that there were two hundred P.L.O. fighters in the camps they would have never attempted an attack on the camps. This is the same reason that they never attacked before. Those cowards were scared of facing the P.L.O. It’s a fact. So now, we know that they are not only murderers, but disgusting and brutal cowards as well.

If history tells us anything, it is that cowards always stab you in the back. They never confront you face to face. It is well known that cowards will break a promise to anyone, at any time. Which is exactly what they did when the Israeli’s broke the promise to the Americans regarding entering and occupying West Beirut. They entered with only one intention, produce more bloodshed. Otherwise, they had no business in Beirut, because the P.L.O. had evacuated the city. I can’t think of any other reason why they would occupy Beirut except to unleash the blood thirsty butchers against the refugee camps. This is the only common factor between the Israeli soldiers and the Christian Phalangist—the thirst for more Palestinian blood.

Later I learned that the Israelis’ had explained to the Americans that Sabra and Shatila were an accident. I couldn’t help but think that this execution of innocent civilians was simply the way they planned it. I wish I had had the opportunity to explain to Mr. Sharon what an accident is. An accident is when you step on a banana peel and slip—this is an accident. How dare he be the cause of raping and murdering over thirty five hundred souls? How can this be an accident when it was planned? I know for a fact that when they raped, tortured and killed my girl Rola, it was no accident. It was a murder. Someone needed to explain to the Hitler of Israel the difference between an accident and a murder. I will leave this explanation to the professionals. I would have liked to ask Sharon, “We have buried our dead bodies, can you bury your shame?”

I know that he could not, because he had been living with it for the last quarter of a century. I would like to send this message to the Israeli Government—I will not forget the Sabra and Shatila massacre, but I am willing to forgive, if they are ready to look forward to a peaceful future without hate, revenge or fear. Let’s give each other a chance to live together in the same country under one God so that our kids may have a better life in a peaceful atmosphere.

I am not going to say, “Death to Israel,” as I realize that they have the right to live as we do. The problem we are facing is between two rights. The question being why is it so difficult to make things right? Peace is the answer to all our prayers, yet we choose war. There is a very tenuous line between Peace and War, and we have a choice between one or the other in every action we take. If it is a choice, then together let’s use the blood of Sabra and Shatila victims as fuel to drive us towards a permanent and final peace.

GOD BLESS,
